Being the parents of small children, we try very hard to raise our family with as little exposure to harmful toxins as we practically can (we’re not totally crunchy, but we avoid most chemicals and try to live in harmony with our planet when at all possible).
When our son, Clay, started teething, we started reading a study about toxic chemicals and endocrine disrupters, like BPA, being found in ALL plastic teethers on the market (even those labeled BPA free!). I was outraged and immediately began scouring the internet for a better alternative. I read about maple teethers and the benefits of this wood that doesn’t splinter and is naturally antibacterial. Sounded good to me.
Before Amazon Prime could deliver a maple teething ring to my door, Jon came in from the garage with a maple teether shaped like wooden knuckles and a rattling teether shaped like a baseball diamond (our “original”). I loved them and suggested we post them on a local buy/sell Facebook page for baby items. Well, apparently we are not the only ones who liked them because they took off! We are now flying by the seat of our pants with this new business venture. We are thrilled to help more children avoid toxic chemicals hidden in plastics and we’re having a lot of fun making these teething toys.
Jon makes all our teethers by hand in our home garage in Santa Paula, California, with fine, untreated maple wood. He loves finding beautiful pieces of wood and creating new designs. (Plus, working in the garage gives him a good excuse to get a way from the chaos a 3 year old & a 6 month old can bring to our house!)
Once the teethers are carved, routed and sanded, we hand rub them with a mixture of organic coconut oil and beeswax.
Our business is a family affair and a little of our heart goes into each one. Thanks so much for your support- we hope you love these as much as we do!
